Chicago Animal Care & Control
2741 S. Western Ave Chicago, IL 60608 (312) 747-1406
The City of Chicago Animal Shelter, Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC), is the largest shelter in the Chicagoland area with an "open door" policy--meaning that they accept any animal--at any time--for any reason, 365 days per year.
CACC is responsible for over 23,000 lost, abandoned or abused animals that enter their doors each year. These animals enter the shelter in various means: given up by owners who no longer want—or have the ability to care for them; as strays—picked up while wandering the streets; or ordered by the courts to confinement as part of the legal process while the case is processed through the court system. Pets that are not reunited with their families are put up for adoption or transferred to rescue partners. Contrary to public perception, most of these animals are wonderful, loving companion animals–they simply have nowhere else to go.
Chicago's largest shelter features:
- A 54,000 square foot building which houses over 500 animals in separate kennels with a fully equipped medical division to care for the animals.
- A command center for Animal Control Officers with a fleet of 18 trucks to answer over 60,000 calls annually.
- Animal intake from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., 365 days a year.
- The Animobile - a mobile 30" van used for off-site adoptions and vaccination clinics.
Friends of Chicago Animal Care & Control
Friends of Chicago Animal Care and Control (FCACC) is the nonprofit group committed exclusively to helping CACC save the lives of over 23,000 animals that come into custody of Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC) each year. Founded in 2001, FCACC provides monetary and volunteer services to support special needs not provided by a city agency. FCACC sponsors specialized medical care, manages the volunteer base, grants funding for staff education, works on socialization of court-case and long-term dogs, markets the shelter as a great place to adopt a pet, and most importantly provides a foster program - working closely with the shelter to save those most vulnerable.
FCACC provides help for as many of those unfortunate animals as we possibly by:
- Gifting the city shelter with monetary resources the city budget doesn’t cover.
- Providing medical equipment and supplementary care, volunteers and adoption opportunities for CACC animals and those in our foster program.
- Spreading awareness about Chicago Animal Care and Control and promoting the great animals who are available for adoption there.
- Fostering the most vulnerable and hard to place.
- Providing training opportunities.
- Partnering with other organizations and community partners to advocate for the compassionate treatment of all animals.
